About the Course

This will be a fun, practical, hands-on day introducing you to some of the basic tools and techniques of greenwood working. You will enjoy cleaving, chopping and shaving greenwood, using a shavehorse and turning on a pole-lathe. During the day you will make several things to take home.

Course Programme: One Day, 9.30am - 4.30pm

1. Introduction To Greenwood Working
A brief introduction to greenwood working and the tools and wood we will be using.

2. Shavehorse Practical Session
A demonstration and instruction of how to use the axe and shavehorse to make shaved items and your chance to have a go.

3. Pole Lathe Practical Session
A demonstration and instruction of how to use the pole lathe to turn wood. Your chance to have a go.

4. Further Techniques And Questions
If there is time or interest we will talk about other aspects of greenwood working (e.g. technique of cleaving, tools, sharpening etc).

Course Tutor: Richard Ely
Richard has 12 years experience running his own business making greenwood and coppice crafts products in and around the Battle area. Richard started out doing apprenticeships in 2005 with greenwood legends Mike Abbott (Living Wood) in Herefordshire and Ben Law (of Grand Designs fame) in West Sussex and has since worked full-time as a greenwood craftsman.

What To Expect:
An informal, hands-on day in a small group learning and experiencing the joys of working greenwood using a range of tools and techniques at an introductory level.

Course participants should be aware that sharp tools will be used and some activities will require reasonable physical input. Stout footwear must be worn, NO OPEN-TOED SHOES PLEASE!

Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Parking is available at the entrance to our farm and our training room is just a short walk down our track.

What To Bring:
Just bring yourself, confirmation of your booking, a notebook and any questions you may have. If you have any dietary requirements please let us know in advance. Please arrive at 9.15am for a prompt 9.30am start.
