Course Start DatesSaturday 7th March 2020
About the Course
In this one-day workshop, you will make a single-section paper binding with fore-edge flat and tie, made without the use of adhesives that can be used as a journal or notebook.
You will be introduced to the materials, methods and terminology of booking binding, learning about paper grain, book mechanics, the cutting and folding of paper, the creation of functional and beautiful book covers and the sewing of books. We will also cover the selection of materials and tools for your own work.
At the end of the session, you will be given a pack containing materials and instructions to make another, similar binding, allowing you to practice your new skills at home.
You will leave this workshop with the skills and knowledge to be able to experiment and create your own simple bindings using only a few basic tools. Full written instructions for recreating the binding we make together will also be provided.
As no previous experience is required, this is an ideal course for beginner bookbinders.
The day will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm
The workshop is limited to 8 participants. For further information and/or bookings please e-mail or text. Participants who are 15 -18 years old must be accompanied by a paying adult.
Ngaio Vince-Dewerse is a book and paper conservator currently working at the Cambridge University Library. She is passionate about bookbinding and is inspired by the creation of things that are both useful and beautiful.
