About the Course

Intended for ceramicists who already have some experience of naked clay work or alternative firing techniques and can bring suitable bisqued ware with a burnished/terra sigged surface.
The two day course will include ferric fuming in tin-foil saggars, making and firing a 'mummy'saggar, one-step naked raku and two-step naked raku techniques to gain some control over the smoke markings on your work. We will not be making any work and the focus will be on decorating and firing techniques. It is hoped that each participant will take home around 10 finished pieces.

Other workshops for ceramicists starting in naked clay are occasionally available. Workshops can also be tailored for your group.

John Evans will be leading the workshop assisted by Tom Peterson and Janet Branscombe. John's work using alternative raku naked clay techniques is widely known in the UK and articles about his techniques have featured in 'Ceramic Review', 'Craft and Design' magazine and international publications.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All tools and materials are included but participants on naked clay courses are asked to bring bisqued work.
Tea and coffee are freely available and the price includes a light lunch each full day.
One en-suite room available at additional cost.

I attended the Naked Raku Intensive workshop run over one and a half days. I have done a fair bit of raku in the past but this course just proves that there is always more to you can learn! I was very pleased with the beautiful results we achieved and I have now added ferric chloride and one-step naked raku to the firings that I can try myself. John has the course timing perfect and we were kept busy from start to finish. Everyone was allowed to try the exciting bits including taking the red-hot pots out of the kiln if they wanted to! Very nice people and great food. Highly recommended.

Very well planned and delivered course, time was spent very productively and there was plenty of opportunity to ask questions about our individual practice.
The firing process was calm and controlled but at the same time exciting, with fascinating results from a number of different raku processes.
I learnt an enormous amount, both days were very productive and enjoyable in a convivial atmosphere, helped along by excellent food and good company.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this course to anyone at whatever stage of ceramic enquiry they are at, it really was a treat!

This was an outstanding course and just right for me at this stage in my development. The quality of the materials was excellent. The standard of the teaching was also excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly.
The food and drink was delicious (Moroccan soup, bread, salad, shortbread biscuits and freshly ground coffee).
We had great fun with fire in a safe and well managed environment.

John delivered an informative and fun course, expertly covering a variety of naked clay techniques. I am very happy with the results I produced as a complete novice and much enjoyed appraising the work of my fellow attendees. The lunch, both days, was delicious, and it was lovely to chat to such an interesting bunch of potters and our hosts John, Janet & Tom. Thanks for the advice and encouragement, I'll be back! All the best, Cath
