About the Course

Looking for Tips, Tricks and Practices from the Trade? Then this is the course for you. Perfect for those confident in sewing, who have completed the intermediate level to take the next step to make garments of higher quality. This course is also perfect for those experienced in home sewing, to give garments that professional touch. Also for designers who want to learn to create a factory finish in their own studio. Working from commercial patterns for menswear or womenswear you can select a garment of your choice in negotiation with your Tutor . Enjoy weekly demonstrations ranging from matching repeats to basic alterations, working with linings and adding pockets.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Construct a garment of your choice using professional techniques
Understand advanced pattern alterations and fitting
Develop the best methods of construction for a variety of garment styles
Use skills for cutting lay your patterns efficiently on advanced fabrics
Work with challenging fabrics to achieve a professional finish
Class format and activities
This is an intensive, practical course that will take your sewing knowledge to the next level and help those more experienced in sewing to refine their skills.
You will be engaging with your tutor and fellow learners to develop your understanding of the differences between home sewn and professionally made garments through group discussions, lectures and/or practical work in the sewing studio.
After you choose a garment to work on, you will be guided through its construction from cutting until final finishing touches.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
This course is suited to Intermediate level students who wish to develop their skills to a more Advanced level .You must be able to work independently on a project with Tutor guidance.
Advanced:
Suitable if you have completed two or more intermediate level courses. You should be able to:
• adjust commercial patterns
• use an intermediate level of construction techniques and finishing
• Students must be able to solve intermediate construction problems independently
Before you enrol, you must have also achieved the following:
• Understand what a grainline is and how to use it
• Understand what a notch is and how to use them
• Know what a layplan is and understand how to cut on fold
• Be competent at using a sewing machine
• Students must be able to read, write and understand fluent English
• Mathematics and numeracy skills are essential

What you need to know before you enrol
Working on patterns and cutting fabric can involve standing at high tables. Please tell the tutor if this is a problem for you.
Sewing machines have a foot operated speed control.
The fashion studios are on the first floor of the Nancy Seear Building and there is wheelchair access via a lift.
Please also note: Aside from bottled water there is no eating or drinking allowed in the fashion studios.

What you will need for your class
a basic sewing kit: sharp fabric scissors, trimming scissors, dressmaker’s pins, tape measure and tracing wheel
• a variety of hand sewing needles and sewing threads
• paper scissors and masking tape
• notepad, pens, pencils, sharpener and eraser
Also:
• you must provide your own fabrics, haberdashery, threads, etc. for your projects and this will be discussed during the lessons
• some specialised materials, including calico for toiling, are available for purchase from your tutor at cost price
• some pattern cutting and garment construction tools are provided for use in the studio
• paper and card are available for use in the studio
• you will need to purchase a sewing machine bobbin from your tutor for £1, refundable at the end of the course
