This course over three sessions is for those who have already taken a basic Japanese woodblock class. It will focus on learning and practising more advanced techniques and texture. Limited to 12 participants.
This is an intensive 3 session course that covers more advanced aspects of the traditional Japanese Woodcut printmaking process – mokuhanga. Japanese Woodcut is a versatile process and differs from western (oil based ink) woodblock in that it is a water based and non-toxic technique, using watercolour pigment, wood block, Japanese carving tools, rice paste and Japanese paper to create beautiful refined prints. It is printed entirely by hand without a printing press. The tutor Carol Wilhide Justin is a practising Japanese Woodcut printmaker having learned her technique from Japanese senseis at MI-Lab in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan. Japanese Woodcut formed the basis for her MA Degree Show at RCA last year.

how to get a uniform flat colour ‘betazurie’
be able to employ different types of graduated shading -brushed on ‘bokashi,’ cut ‘itabokashi’ and joining shaded colours together ‘tsukewase’
