Explore the world of speculative fiction and introduce a pinch of the unexpected to your everyday world.

This course is aimed at anyone who has ever had an inkling of curiosity towards the world of speculative fiction: which includes genres such as sci-fi, fantasy and magical realism.

During this online course delivered via Zoom, you will dip your toes into things othered, unusual, and enchanted, by grounding yourself in the places you know best, and see the everyday through a new lens.

You will use readings and discussions to get inspired and complete writing exercises to stretch your imagination.

This course will give you the confidence to try writing in an unfamiliar genre by providing you with tools to play in a friendly environment, so you can experiment with your writing style.

During the course you will:

- complete writing tasks and short stories from prompts
- learn about the different genres held within speculative fiction
- sample writing techniques within different genre types, to see which you like best
- take part in dynamic group discussions about effective speculative fiction writing
- gain feedback on your writing style.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course, you’ll have built confidence in your writing skills and will leave with a series of story starters to develop on your own.

You’ll also have a supportive network of fellow writers to potentially work with and have access to a variety of online resources.

Level: Beginner / Intermediate

Entry requirement: No previous experience is necessary.

Tutor Profile: Dr. Sally Gales has always been drawn to the world of Speculative Fiction.

She has written Fantasy and Sci-Fi novels and has most recently been published in the anthology: Scotland After the Virus, and enjoys adding a sprinkle of speculative magic to her short stories.

Sally has a short fantasy story being published in New Writers Scotland 39.

In addition to writing, Sally teaches at the University of Glasgow, and hopes to make the world of Science Fiction and Fantasy more accessible to anyone with an interest.
