Nature writing is not only one of the most popular literary genres, it is also a great way to connect with the natural world. Join naturalist, author and academic Stephen Moss for a day inspired by nature, and learn how to capture your experiences, feelings and thoughts in writing.
We’ll start the day at 9:30, by simply listening to birdsong and other natural sounds in the grounds of Hawkwood. After this, depending on the weather – we’ll take a stroll and look for wildflowers and butterflies. The focus will be on capturing in words your experiences, thoughts, and emotions about what you discover.
The first part of the afternoon consists of writing short pieces inspired by our morning’s wildlife-watching. Later, we will collaborate on these, analysing the different ways in which each person has chosen to write about similar experiences. All comments will be supportive and positive, bringing the best out in each writer.
Be prepared for all weathers. Please bring a range of clothing (including sun, wind and waterproof), suntan lotion, stout walking shoes or boots, binoculars if you have them, and a notebook or digital voice recorder to make notes in the field.
