About the Course

A Day in the Woods – Creative Courses for Kids -

Hawkmoth Wood is 12 acres of private Ancient Woodland in North Yorkshire between Easingwold and Boroughbridge. The Ancient Woodland is over 400 years old, and we have 24 species of tree and hundreds of species of wild flowers and insects including butterflies and moths, not to mention lots of woodland birds, fascinating fungi, and a myriad of mosses.

We’ll start the day over a hot chocolate and a chat on how to stay safe in the woods – then we’ll begin with a walk along the stream, through the dark forest and back through the oak coppice, stopping no doubt at the new pond, we’ll end up in the bluebell wood where hopefully in April and early May we’ll see a wonderful carpet of blue flowers.

Armed with a pen & paper we’ll be making notes and sketches and collecting specimens on our way around.

Getting Creative

Back at camp & using the notes, drawings & treasures collected in the wood the children will have the opportunity to draw, paint, make collages, make a nest box, bark rubbings & make things out of what we’ve found & maybe if there’s time get messy & creative with some wild clay.

We’ll be Identifying what birds, trees, animals & insects we’ve seen and using the digital microscope look at some of our tinier residents.

If the weather is fine we’ll eat lunch outside and make some woodland fare on the outdoor stove.!

After lunch there’ll be pond dipping, looking for butterflies and insects in the afternoon sunshine, visiting the bees. ( carefully! ), and of course we can watch the birds coming to the feeders with more creative arty fun back at base camp.

We’ll finish the day with another hot chocolate and a discussion about the importance of looking after our woodlands until Mum or Dad arrive.

This is a great opportunity for children with a keen interest in nature and art to explore and be creative, and to learn how to identify different species, no two days will be the same and we’ll find some fascinating things…

We might get a bit muddy and it might even rain so bring the necessary warm clothes and footwear just in case!
