2 Day Woodland Bowl Carving Course (camping available)
On this two-day introduction to the ancient craft of bowl carving you will use traditional hand tools to carve your own bowl from native green timber. In beautiful Ellekers Wood (Woodland camping is available on site at £15 per night, please contact Mike for details) The joy of this traditional craft is that it requires few tools and materials. We will use carving axes and woodcarving knives to shape the outside of the bowl and a selection of gouges and hook knives to hollow the inside. Safe and effective techniques of using these tools and working with green wood will be developed. Throughout the course a strong emphasis will be placed on safety. We will learn how to select and split green wood logs for bowl carving, which woods are best for bowl carving and methods for drying, finishing and decorating your work. At the end of the two days, you will leave not only with your own hand carved bowl but also with the knowledge, practical skills and inspiration to continue your green wood carving journey at home. If you have your own carving tools, you are encouraged to bring them although carving tools will be provided for anyone that needs them. All materials will be provided. A good general level of health and physical fitness is required for bowl carving as the majority of the work is undertaken while standing and the carving work can be quite energetic. Campers can arrive on Friday evening and enjoy an evening around the campfire before the course begins on Saturday morning. Saturday evening will be spent sharing experiences and perhaps some acoustic music around the campfire. Open fire cooking will be available for the evening meal.

I'm Mike Craig, a green woodworker based at the Otley Chevin Forest Park which is situated above the picturesque market town of Otley, West Yorkshire. I have over 20 years experience as an educator in countryside management and wildlife conservation and am a total tree geek. The only thing I enjoy more than carving green wood in a woodland setting is helping others to discover and develop their own woodland craft skills.
