One day a week, 10-week-long masterclass
2021 dates: 10 Fridays starting from Friday 7th May to Friday 9th July

Hello and welcome to our 10-week masterclass in Traditional Lampshade Making. In this exciting new course, designed for anybody interested in taking a journey through lampshade making, you will learn the skills of our traditional craft extensively, benefiting from my fifteen years of experience. This one day a week, 10-week course aims to offer more than a series of one-off sessions, providing instead a deeper and closer look at how to make many of the most popular and enduring lampshades and all of the additional skills required.

After teaching one-off lampshade making courses for many years, we realised that there was a gap for a course that was truly all-encompassing, offering all the skills that someone might need to become a confident lampshade maker, and perhaps even start their own business. With our experience and desire to share knowledge, we knew that we were the right people to offer it.

On this course, you’ll acquire the new skills and techniques necessary to be competent in lampshade making. This comprehensive course will take you and your business to the next level, should you wish to set up a career in lampshade making and launch your own business. I’ll guide you from your very first stitches to having the beginnings of your own lampshade collection, and offer tips and tricks along the way so you grow in confidence with everything you learn.

We’re passionate about lampshade making at Moji Designs and believe that anyone can create professional-looking shades with a little bit of instruction and hard work. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a complete novice or a more seasoned craftsperson – we’ll work with you whatever your skills and we’ll support you through every step of the journey and you’ll be sure to surpass your expectations.

From the comfort of our pleasant, spacious Brighton-based studio you’ll be taken through the making process for several types of lampshades from classic tailored lampshades to pleated, gathered, swathed lampshades and more. As the weeks progress you’ll begin to build up a varied, interesting collection. We can help with fabric selection and talking through different types of trims and embellishments, and you could even take the opportunity to bring some old fabric from home that you’d like to repurpose.

In this 10-week-long course, you’ll learn to master the following techniques and projects:

-Traditional tailored lampshade
-Pleated lampshade
-Gathered lampshade
-Swathed pleated/gathered lampshade
-Balloon lining
-Pleated/gathered lining
-Demonstration of exterior lining for ornate frames
-Hand-sewn bias trim
-Demonstration of various cover and assembling techniques for ornate and awkward frame shapes
-Business related topics such as pricing and selling your lampshades

Our weekly sessions will feature a lot of practical work, demonstrations, advice, information sharing and recommendations. Each project will be within everyone’s capabilities, whilst being challenging enough to stretch those lampshade makers who have already built basic lampshade making skills. The course is structured to manage each lampshade making project within the class, but students are encouraged to carry out work in between weekly sessions.

At the end of the course, everyone will have five completed lampshades that they are proud to take home, but more importantly, they will have tackled the trickiest kind of lampshade making techniques.

During the sessions, there will be an opportunity to meet other like-minded people on the course with plenty of time to discuss your plans for lampshade making over refreshments and stitching. I’ll be there to help you work out what the first steps of your business might look like, and discuss anything from how to put a lampshade collection together, to pricing and selling your lampshades online and to retailers.

Lampshade making is the beating heart of all we do at Moji Designs – a traditional craft designed to bring light, beauty and colour into the home – and we are so excited to bring that to you.

We look forward to welcoming you on this amazing course!
